Search engine optimization
Content
Try to put some content on your pages and use the keyphrases from your keywords meta. The more content, the more search engines have, to analyse your page. Also, everything that isn’t content, leave it out, or put it in external files. Things that aren’t content are, javascript, css,… They can all be called from <link> tags in the head of your page.
Structure
Search engines read your page, just like humans do. If you use valid XHTML and use separated CSS for your layout, you’ve already made sure that your code is clean and valid. Make sure, your code is not only valid, but your structure is in a logical order. With logical order, I mean, don’t put your footer at the top and your main info at the bottom. This also means, use header tags in the correct order. <h1> <h2> ... and not leaving one out (jumping from <h2> to <h4>).
Don’t trick
Don’t try to trick the engines. Nowadays, they are quite well protected against trickery and when detected, your page will pay the price.
These are some of the basic things your should pay attention to, when you want a good listing. Don’t forget, search engines adjust their algorythm all the time, so what works one moment, may not work another.
