Merging IM

With Microsoft’s MSN messenger and the Yahoo equivalent, Y! Messenger, finally teaming up now that Microsoft is building its Live services, there aren’t many IM services that aren’t inner-connected. ICQ and AIM already were compatible with eachother after AOL bought Mirabilis in 1998. So that only leaves Jabber and Google Talk (which has a Jabber-based protocol) that play on their own.

Also with the emergance of the Microsoft Live, they offer a browser version for when you’re on the road. There have been many of such web-based clients before it in the past and there are still new ones emerging, like the nice Kool IM, released less than a week ago.
So when will we be using 1 single IM and who will own it?
